A life to love

10 Food Documentaries for a Fresh Perspective

Watch these documentaries to learn more about “real” food.

There are two kinds of people in this world.  Those that set new health goals at the beginning of a year and those that give New Year’s resolutions the cold shoulder, thereby affirming that a number on a calendar is not going to subject them to try something new.  The good news is that what I’m about to share with you works for both types!  However, what I’m about to share WILL change your life.  It might give you a new perspective.  It might give you a whole new way of life.  That’s what it did for my husband and me a year ago.

We watched the documentary Food, Inc. I’m telling you…don’t do it! But do it.  This is very similar to how I feel about The Bachelor, actually.  Except this might add intelligence to your brain.  It’s a documentary about genetically modified organisms and how they are everywhere.  Literally.  If you’re already tuning out, don’t.  You learn about giant companies that are illegally influencing and basically making laws – it’s almost like the movies American Hustle or The Wolf of Wall Street.  ShadyThat’s Food Inc but with some food and health lessons thrown in for good measure.

A little over a year ago, my husband found out that his choking on food is caused by cow’s milk, specifically casein.  It swells up his throat and food gets caught.  So we began this food journey of life without cheese, ice cream, yogurt, etc.  And that’s how we found this documentary.  We now eat with the 80/20 rule of “clean” eating.  Basically that means if a food has an ingredient that I cannot pronounce or I can’t make it myself (xanthum gum), we don’t eat it.  80/20 because quite frankly we’re real people with real lives.

And as I was speaking to a co-worker of mine last week, Bren, about a documentary on student learning, she and I admitted that we love documentaries!  We swapped some titles of ones that we loved from hair wigs to food to dolphins.  And with the Golden Globes this past Sunday and the Oscars around the corner, I thought I would compile a list of some worthy documentaries that will give you a fresh perspective on food.
